Dan Leech Naval Architecture

L650 Sport Boat

Watch the video »

A lot of what has been learnt through our successful skiff designs has gone into creating this exciting sport boat. While the aft sections are reasonably flat and wide for high speed planning and to help with form stability, care has been taken with the prismatic coefficient not to over do this, and make downwind sailing easy. Features include a retracting keel, retracting prod, storage lockers beside the keel (one for outboard engine) and main sail boom sheeting. Construction is from a detailed CNC cut file, cedar core hull bottom, foam core for hull topsides, deck, and all interior structure, all skinned in a light carbon laminate. The L650 Sport Boat has won the Australian Sport Boat National Titles, Australian Sport Boat Winter Nationals and Queensland State Titles.

'What an experience! Working with Dan Leech to build my Leech 650, named ‘Sailing Gallery’, was fantastic. During the brainstorming period of building the boat, Dan offered a lot of support and advice on design and materials. He shared a lot of practical knowledge, offered his support and feedback quickly. During this process I had the freedom to semi-customise the boat, and its adjustable design to what I envisaged. This support has continued, even after the completion of the boat and during the sea-trailing period; helping to tune the boat to its maximum potential'.
